UNAPOLOGETICALLY AUTHENTIC

Tom Morello has built a decades-long reputation for breaking the boundaries of traditional musical genres and playing styles

Seamlessly navigating hard rock, alternative, classic rock, hip-hop, folk and everything in between, Morello possesses an ability to coax otherworldly sounds out of his guitar to fit his forward-thinking vision.

“The first way I would describe my guitar sound is it’s unapologetically authentic. It’s me,” he said.

Morello cultivated that maverick mentality from a young age, growing enamored with 1980s shredders like Randy Rhoads or Eddie Van Halen before his curiosity got the best of him.

“My favorite guitar players when I was growing up would say, ‘It’s all been done on the guitar,’” he said. “Well, has it? I just began looking at the guitar. It’s just a piece of wood, it’s six wires and a few electronics that can produce sounds in nontraditional ways.”

As he continued to develop his unique style, Morello became known for having a special guitar for each stage of his prolific career. One of the most important instruments in his arsenal is the infamous “Soul Power” Stratocaster he used during his multi-platinum run with alt-rock supergroup Audioslave.

Morello found this modified Designer Series Strat calling to him on the wall of a guitar store, its sleek Black finish with matching headcap and shimmering chrome pickguard perfect for commemorating his new band.

Morello made the Soul Power Strat sing, growl and shriek on Audioslave hits like “Doesn’t Remind Me,” “Cochise” and “Be Yourself,” and you can hear him run it through the full sonic spectrum in his edition of Fender Sessions.

“It was like a bolt of inspiration,” said Morello. “In white marker, I just wrote ‘Soul Power’ on it, and we were off. Every band, in order to be great, has to find its authentic footing. There was a tremendous amount of love and soul in the room when we were writing those songs. This real freedom of artistic expression, and I was trying to use the guitar as a divining rod to channel that.”
